things to avoid in Florence

May 21st, 2010 by

This might seem a little annoying to you folks but rest assured that its better getting an “i already knew” response than a “why didn’t you tel me” one. Its not the first time i get to spectate an incident when a supervisor, be it in a train or a bus, is arguing with people who don’t understand Italian to pay a fine for not validating the ticket. It seems like a comedy show where the supervisor is speaking in Italian, with his typical Tuscan accent and a  “no” and “pay” the only words in English, trying to make the helpless tourist understand his mistake. Italy is not well known for speaking English all right. The ironic part is that many of the Italians blame you folks for coming here and not knowing Italian :)

Jokes apart,  if you do notice, there will be an explanation at the back of your ticket, explaining the obligation of validating the ticket before getting into the train. Too bad that the explanation is only written in Italian. In case it is a bus ticket, then it should be validated as soon as you enter the bus. For any reason if you are not able to validate the ticket,  one must look for the supervisor to inform him or her of the incident.

Another tip to be aware of, is that the ticket costs more if you purchase it on board. Especially a train ticket can come up to 8 Euros more than its actual price. Too bad that you folks are not informed of all this when you buy the ticket. Hope you don’t get to neither be spectator of such an event or nor be a victim!
