San Marco has now become a busy square especially since the center has turned into a pedestrian area, thus changing routes for all vehicles towards this location.

The head office of the University of Florence called Università degli Studi di Firenze  is present on the square. A Domenican church as well as an ancient convent is located here. The convent is now a museum. On the center of the piazza(square), lies the famous statue  of General Manfredo Fanti. 

The Accademia delle Belle Arti is just a 3 minute walk from the piazza that treasures the real statue of David and other works of the great Michelangelo .
