Most pay phones in Italy now do not accept coins. The pre-paid phone cards are needed which you can buy at the tobacconists called “tabacchi” in Italy. The cards are of 5 or 10 Euros.

There still are some phones which accept coins but be careful, most of them will not give the change back. Then of course there are international calling cards available in most of theinternet points. Do ask for which is the most suitable one for the country you are calling since the calling minutes differ from place to place. It is the cheapest and most convenient way to make international calls with exceptions to programs like skype of course

The public phones are located in almost all the main squares of the city.
