Il Duomo
“Duomo” is the regular word that means Cathedral. The Cathedral of Florence is known as the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore finished in1436 byFilippo Brunelleschi. This mesmerising Gothic-style architecture, externally consists of marble in shades of green and pink.
The Cathedral is not the only beauty in the square, in front of Brunelleschi’s speciality, lies the Baptistery and besides it the Campanile of Giotto. The Baptistery is one of the oldest buildings in the city(between 1059-1128) and it proudly boasts its Florentine Romanesque style of architecture while the Campanile is rich of sculptures all to the top of the 14meter tower and has the same structure of the Cathedral.
In mid 2010, the heart of the city has been made a completely pedestrian area. This makes it a lot easier for the people to walk around freely, finally eliminating the irritatingly overcrowded sidewalks.
