Caravaggio and Florence

2010 is the celebration of the fourthest century anniversary of the death of one of the greatest Italian painters: Michelangelo Merisi from Caravaggio. Many cities offered to honor this great artist through exhibitions and among them is Florence.  The art works will be exposed inside the Uffizi and the Palazzo Pitti.

On May 22nd 2010 the exhibition “Caravaggio and Caravaggeschi in Florence” will be opened to public until the 10th October 2010.

Palaces in Florence

Strozzi Palace
Strozzi Palace is one of the historical buildings of Florence and constitutes one of the greatest example of civilian architectural of the Renaissance. It is possible to enter the building from three monumental entrances that overlooks respectively on the Piazza Strozzi, from Via Strozzi and from Via Tornabuoni.  Was named after the buyer’s family Strozzi, a rich florentine dealer in competition with the Medici family.   In order to realize this Palace nine buildings were destroyed.   The architect to which the project was assigned is Benedetto da Maiano. At the end of the twentieth century the building was made over to the Italian State that utilizes it as the site for some important institution such as the Gabinetto Vieusseux.

Santa Maria Novella Church in Florence

Santa Maria Novella is one of the first historical Churches of Florence,  in which the Gothic characteristics are evident such as the  glass decorated windows and the coverage with the groin vault and pointed arcs.

Piazza del Duomo in Florence Italy

Piazza del Duomo is the religious center of Florence.  In this large area we find the church of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Belfry and the Baptistery of Saint Giovanni.

The Brancacci Chapel

The Brancacci Chapel is located on the right side of the major altar in the Church of S. Maria del Carmine in Florence.  The name is from the Brancacci family, owner of the Chapel, that commissioned the famous pictorial cycle covering the three walls with histories of San Peter as well as two episodes from the Genesi:  the “Original Awful” and the “Expulsion from the Eden”.

La Loggia dei Lanzi

The Loggia of Lanzi is located in Piazza Signoria in Florence, on the right side of the Palazzo Vecchio’s entrance . It’s named after the “Lanzichenecchi” foot soldiers that around the 16Th century were hired by the Holy Roman Empire to protect Italy and Rome .  The Loggia was built at the end of year 1300 and has inspired the Greatest Master of the fifteenth century, Filippo Brunelleschi for the construction of the “Spedale degli Innocenti“, located in Piazza Santissima Annunziata in Florence.
